Chapter 22

Tristan

“You don’t have to walk me up,” Scarlet says, when I get out of the car with her.

“Yes, I do.”

“I thought you said the threat to me was taken care of?” Her inquisitive gaze penetrates mine guilelessly.

“It is. But you can never be too careful. I won’t let anything harm you, ever again.” I’m not going to tell her that Andrew still needs to be dealt with. He encroached on our territory, and he is going to pay for it. I don’t give a flying fuck who he is.

She leads me into her apartment building, and we wait for the lift in an easy silence, which piques my curiosity.

“Why are you so comfortable?” I ask, with narrowed eyes. “I thought you’d be running a mile by now after what Max told you.”

She gives me a sultry smile that catches me slightly off-guard. “I feel different with you. You didn’t pressure me or even ask me for a date. You gave me your number and left it for me to call you. That makes a difference in my head right now. I haven’t even begun to process any of this, but that I know. Is that okay with you?”

I nod slowly, starting to figure out how she thinks. It takes her a minute. Not because she doesn’t understand, but because she is cautious and has solidly built walls up. “More than okay.” I return her smile and she steps a little closer to me when we enter the lift.

We go up in silence again and when we reach the front door of her penthouse, I fully expect her to send me packing.

“Come in?” she asks, opening the door.

Wild horses couldn’t stop me. I let her lead me inside and then I close the door quietly behind me and lean against it.

“Nice place,” I comment, just for something to say. I haven’t felt this awkward around a woman since I was a young teen. It’s unnerving and I’m completely disarmed. I’ve got nothing. Absolutely nothing.

“Thanks,” she replies, placing her bag and her wrap on the side table near the door and taking off her shoes. “Unzip me?”

She turns her back to me and pulls her hair over her shoulder.

Blinking once, I hesitate for the first time in my life. Something seems off here. Why is she coming on to me after everything that just happened to her?

Keeping my eyes wide open at the invitation, I push off from the door and reach for the zip. I pull it down slowly, seductively from her nape to the top of her arse and then trail my fingertips lightly up her spine. Without a word of thanks, she slips it off her shoulders until it falls to the floor and then she steps out of it, walking towards the hallway which leads to her bedroom in just her matching lacy underwear. The Dom in me wants to tie her up and cut it off ever so slowly, but I rein that urge in and follow her as she wants me to do.
